The official Map.Geoportal - guide

The new map portal

The Geoportal of the National Grand Duchy of Luxembourg offers a new map portal, which is free available from the beginning of February 2010 under the URL This special new version is oriented to the general public and offers the following advantages between the original geoportal:

  • A fullscreen mode, where the size of the map can be specified by the user
  • An increased speed of loading and displaying due to new technology used
  • An organization of contents by subject category rather than by data and data sets
  • Structured content, complies with European Directive INSPIRE
  • Intuitives manipulation tools similar to google
  • Managing the transparency of any data layer displayed
  • Background layers combines orthophotos and topographic maps through adjustable transparency
  • A quick search of municipalities, localities, addresses and parcel numbers in a single search box

Map navigation

By clicking on the arrow direction button, you can move the map in the 4 main directions.

By holding down the left button of your mouse, the system presents a navigation pointer. With this pointer, you can move the map.

After pushing the right button of your mouse, the system shows you a tooltip with details of the current position.

Zoom control

By using this tool, you can change the scale level of the map (zoom positive and negative).
The different levels of scale are set to fix values.


Zoom by double click

By double-clicking on the map, the portal automatically zoom to the clicked location.

Zoom by scrolling

The mouse wheel zoom does a negative / positive zoom to the current map position.

Zoom by selection with the "Shift" button

By using the shift key on the keyboard in combination with the left mouse button, it is possible to draw a North-South selection rectangle.
In releasing the mouse button after drawing the rectangle, the portal automatically zoom to the content, defined by the rectangle.

Zoom to the extent of the country

By clicking on this button, you can return to the main view of the map.


The taskbar

Overview of the taskbar :

Home button

With the Home button, you can return to the portal home page.
Your session is getting automatically reset.

Help button

By clicking on the Help button displays this document.
This help is formulated in wiki format by using the dokuwiki system.

Contact button

The Contact button opens a new page with a contact form.
If you have any suggestions or complaints, please let us know.
Get informations on the legal base by clicking on the Legal bases button.

Language bar

Do your language choice to display the map portal in your preferred language.
The current language is displayed in bold.


Show full map

By clicking on the function Full map, the menu disappears and the map appears in a larger size.
To reopen the menu just click on .

Aerial Images

With this function it is possible to overlie the base layer with the aerial image by setting their degree of transparency through the regulator button.




Background/basic plan choice

With this function you can choose the basic plan (background).
You have the following options:
- Topographic map
- White background

Previous map view

This button lets you return to the previous view.

Next map view

This button takes you back to the next view after returning to the previous view.

Calculate distance

With this function, it is possible to calculate a distance between two or more points.
To begin, you simply click on a point on the map where you want to start, then you set a second point of your choice by double-clicking on the map again.
The distance between the two points is displayed in a new window. The distance unit is indicated in kilometers.

Calculate area

With this function, it is possible to calculate the area inside the polygon, defined by a series of points where you can point on the map.

Fast research

The quick search allows you to locate locations on the map specified by encoding all or part of the name of a town or locality.


With the function Link, it is possible to create permalinks on the current map. The system builds relationships that safeguard the parameters to reconstruct the current map displayed with all the current layers activated.


You can simply print or save the map in PDF format by clicking the Print button.
1. Click the Print button in the toolbar.
2. A red rectangle appears, representing the printing area. The dimensions of the rectangle depends first on the scale of the active map, and secondly on the scale selection for printing. After choosing the printing scale, you can redirect the red rectangle on the location of your choice.
3. After placing the red rectangle on the desired location, click Print on the Print submenu.
4. Then the portal tells you that he is creating your PDF.
5. When the window has finished producing the PDF, you can open the file with Adobe Reader, who can be downloaded for free at


Drawing/Redlining action

The drawing/redlining bar allows you to create annotations in the map.
By example, you can place graphical objects or personal text on the current map.
Activate the menu by clicking on Drawing.

Layer selection

In the section “Layer selection” the activated geodata layers are displayed.

The catalog offers a variety of geographical data, structured according to themes set out in Annexes I to III of the INSPIRE directive.
In this menu you can enable or disable different layers by checking or unchecking the box.

The categories currently available:

  • Geographical location
    • Administrative units
    • Properties, buildings and addresses
  • Transport
    • Buildings
    • Transport networks
  • Land surface
    • Orthophoto-images
    • Hydrography
  • Environment, Biology and Geology
    • Habitats and biotopes

Hide/Show the menu

By clicking on the Full map button, the sidebar is removed and gives us the most of screen space for displaying the map.
To reopen the menu just click on .


The status bar

Map scale

The scale bar shows you the current scale of the map.

Map Preview/Overview

If you click the bottom left image , an overview of the entire territory of the Grand Duchy is displayed.
On the mini-map overview, you always see your current map position as an extent of the current view in the main map, represented by a red rectangle.
To close the preview, you simply have to click on .


Zoom level choice

With this dropbox, you can do a manual choice of the global map zoom scale.

Coordinate system choice

The national Luxembourgish reference system (LUREF, based on a conformal projection type Gauss) is default activated to display the mapping of geographical data in the viewer. However the user can display the cursor position in longitude / latitude in the system “GGS84”. This allows for example users of GPS receivers to find the coordinates of POI (places of interest) coordinates used by GPS. If no reprojection is performed, reference system changings are done directly by the cursor coordinates.

Coordinate indicator

Displays details on the current position of the mouse.
